In much of the art world today, intention is considered paramount. Artists push the boundaries of cultural propriety under the pretext of provoking necessary questions, And it’s up to the viewer if the “discursive intention” is enough; enough to justify the work of an artist who uses an image, a culture, even an emotion that isn’t their own.

Chris Martin, Untitled, 2015-16
Acrylic and glitter on canvas, 77 x 60 in

We invite you to take part in a world where you don’t have to pretend. You don’t need a discursive pretense, and your work doesn’t need a deeper meaning, intention or excuse. The ends are the same as the means: fun. That doesn’t mean you don’t get to have a dark side. After all, what’s fun without a little danger? This show will be immersive and it will seem endless, made to exhaust the limits of viewers’ senses.

Calvin Marcus, Automatic Drawing (Untitled) (2017)
Oil crayon and Flashe on gessoed linen, 28 x 96 in

In creating this exhibition, we extend an invitation that echoes fiction’s tyrannical chocolate mogul Willy Wonka: “Come with me and you’ll be/ In a world of pure imagination/..what we’ll see will defy explanation…” In this exhibition, the truth of the work will be the viewer’s experience. We want this to be a joy ride, a sugar rush, a high. Reflection can come later, because after you immerse your senses in this saccharin world, there will inevitably be some kind of hangover, comedown or crash.
